Usage by Distribution:

  • Debian/Ubuntu: rsyslog
  • RHEL/Fedora:

Standard logs:

  • Debian/Ubuntu: /var/log/syslog
  • RHEL/Fedora: /var/log/message

SSH sessions logging:

  • Debian/Ubuntu: /var/log/auth.log
  • RHEL/Fedora: /var/log/secure

Rsyslog
