About Toto

Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word which means "all inclusive," the group was intent on exploring every style of music.

The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make Toto a household name across the globe.

After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to record a new album and change their name a different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a huge tour around the world. After several weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

After that, the group was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit show for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time that all the original Toto members appeared performing together for more than 31 years. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto has been one of the most adored rock groups for more than three decades, scoring massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum smash, "Africa."
